How to Talk to Camera 110% More Confidently

Lights. Camera. “Holy moly, I’m about to record my first YouTube video!”

My very first video wasn’t shot in a fancy room with perfect lighting - it was recorded in a gloomy corridor lit by fluorescent tubes outside a block of toilets.

I hit record, spat out a few words about my channel vision, and uploaded it.

What felt like a 30-second clip ended up feeling like 30 hours of nerve-wracking madness.

But after I’d done it, I knew my future was about to change forever.

My Big Challenge

I’ve always been that person who dreads speaking in public.

Even though I’ve talked at events and in front of large crowds, my heart would pound so hard I could barely hear myself think.

I also struggled to keep conversations going, often worrying about saying the wrong thing.

And only recently did I realise that I sometimes have a little stutter - I'd say a few words, then pause for a second to gather my thoughts.

It felt like every time I spoke, I was battling a mini-crisis.

And, honestly, that made recording videos super intimidating.

I wanted to be confident on camera, but my inner critic just got in the way.

But I found two game-changing lessons that helped me talk on camera more confidently.

So, I’m sharing these with you so you can see a big boost in your own camera presence too, which will lead to people watching your videos for longer (if you're comfortable on camera, people feel comfortable watching your videos!).

Lesson #1: You Aren’t Alone in Your Room

When sitting in your room, recording a video, it can feel like it’s just you and a camera staring back.

Being alone can make you want to record for hours, trying to get every word perfect.

But here’s the thing... people don’t resonate with perfection - they want real, genuine connections.

Basically, if you’re chill and real, your viewers will 100% feel it!

Instead of thinking, “I need to nail every word,” act like you’re hanging out with your best mate over a cup of coffee (preferably an Americano).

When you record, pretend you’re having a casual chat with someone who really needs your help.

You could even print out a picture & put a picture of your 'ideal viewer' next to your camera.

This takes away the pressure to be perfect, and it makes it easier for people to watch your videos because you’re just being yourself.

It might feel a bit weird at first, but trust me - it works!

Lesson #2: Stop Writing to the 30-Year-Old Professionals

When we write, we sometimes get carried away using big, fancy words, thinking it makes us sound smarter.

But most people just want to understand you easily without having to pause and decode what you said.

Basically, using overly grown-up language can actually push your viewers away.

So here’s a cool ChatGPT prompt I use when writing...

“Write this as though you're 12–14 years old.”

[Paste script]

It forces me to use simple, clear language that’s super easy to follow.

This way, your videos sound natural and fun, and your viewers stick around because they get what you're saying!

Quick Win of the Week

Have you ever been super frustrated with how slow your channel is growing?

I 100% get it—I’ve been there too, like way too many times.

Basically, the pressure to get big fast can really mess with your head.

But small channels actually have a secret superpower that big channels don’t.

We often get so caught up in the idea of growing a 'big channel' that we forget one simple fact: small channels can completely change things up whenever something isn’t working.

Big channels, on the other hand, have a loyal audience that expects the same type of video every single time, which kinda limits their freedom to experiment.

So, instead of stressing over how long it takes to hit those big numbers, let’s change things up.

It’s like trying to build the biggest & coolest house ever - you don’t worry about how many friends will visit right away, you just focus on making it flippin' awesome first.

Focusing on growth alone can make you feel stuck and frustrated.

But you're only just building the foundations.

So instead of obsessing over getting bigger, start by making your channel better.

Work on making better videos, improving your systems, and sharpening your strategy.

Once you do that, getting bigger will naturally follow.

Think better, not bigger.

Keep Creating,
Nat

Running a YouTube channel alone is basically like juggling flaming swords - you’re gonna drop something eventually & probably really hurt yourself. When you’re knee‑deep in scripting, editing, thumbnails, and community posts, it’s super easy to burn out and not upload as often as you like. And that means fewer videos, fewer views, less growth, and honestly, a lower mood. Think of AI as your Robin (and of course, you're Batman) - who actually gets stuff done, and will always go out of its way...
